Service level agreements are becoming a critical part of outsourcing agreements. They are an important way to objectively measure an outsourcing supplier's performance. The most common metrics of quality, speed and price clearly let each partner assess the current level of service the buyer is receiving. If performance slides, the service level agreement may trigger cost reductions for the buyer. Putting these metrics in writing is important because it provides the legal basis for contract termination.
