According to Privacy International, Google ranks dead last concerning privacy: "Comprehensive consumer surveillance & entrenched hostility to privacy". Google's specific privacy failures include, but are by no means limited to:

• Google account holders that regularly use even a few of Google's services must accept that the company retains a large quantity of information about that user, often for an unstated or indefinite length of time, without clear limitation on subsequent use or disclosure, and without an opportunity to delete or withdraw personal data even if the user wishes to terminate the service.
• Google maintains records of all search strings and the associated IP-addresses and time stamps for at least 18 to 24 months and does not provide users with an expungement option. While it is true that many US based companies have not yet established a time frame for retention, there is a prevailing view amongst privacy experts that 18 to 24 months is unacceptable, and possibly unlawful in many parts of the world.
• Google has access to additional personal information, including hobbies, employment, address, and phone number, contained within user profiles in Orkut. Google often maintains these records even after a user has deleted his profile or removed information from Orkut.
• Google collects all search results entered through Google Toolbar and identifies all Google Toolbar users with a unique cookie that allows Google to track the user's web movement. Google does not indicate how long the information collected through Google Toolbar is retained, nor does it offer users a data expungement option in connection with the service.
• Google fails to follow generally accepted privacy practices such as the OECD Privacy Guidelines and elements of EU data protection law. As detailed in the EPIC complaint, Google also fails to adopted additional privacy provisions with respect to specific Google services.
• Google logs search queries in a manner that makes them personally identifiable but fails to provide users with the ability to edit or otherwise expunge records of their previous searches.
• Google fails to give users access to log information generated through their interaction with Google Maps, Google Video, Google Talk, Google Reader, Blogger and other services.

• Your Identity closely guarded at BookmarkSync - You are never required to provide any personal information. A real email address is requested so we can contact you about your account, but it is never released to anyone and your bookmarks are personal and private. The only way anyone can know anything about you is if you allow your 'handle' to be associated with a public collection that you create. Some people like to do this. You are never contacted by any other member. If you want to meet strangers, there are websites out there for doing that. BookmarkSync is for synchronizing your browsers and bookmarks between different computers. It is only social to the extent that it can benefit you in finding great websites. • Your private bookmarks are protected at BookmarkSync - Access to the system is closely monitored, your last login time and IP address is presented to you each time you login to the server to help you monitor access to your account. Your bookmarks may be sent via SSL so that they are encrypted as they move from one computer to another. BookmarksSync provides secure SSL access for your browser via an https: connection so that even when viewing your bookmarks online, you can be assured that you and only you are able to view your bookmarks in an unencrypted format.
  
• Anonymous search engine - The BookmarkSync search engine never indexes any protected websites. (No https, ftp or any other protocol other than http). We also don't log any personal information about your searches. Heck, we don't even log your searches. Your interests and search activity is completely private.

• Private RSS feeds - RSS feeds of your bookmark folders are available to you, and also to of any public collections that you publish. You can use any freely available RRS reader or aggregator website to view your collections. You can even use your mobile device!
  
  
  There are also RSS feeds available for the most the recently bookmarked websites, most popular websites, and for every bookmark cluster imaginable! Are you interested in arts & crafts? Add the 'Arts & Crafts' cluster to your favorite RSS reader and be notified whenever a great new website is bookmarked in that cluster. You can even publish these feeds on your blog or website to give your site current and new content automatically!

• No Manual Importing required - The BookmarkSync client software automatically synchronizes all of your local browsers and imports your bookmarks to the server. The BookmarkSync wizard guides you through the simple startup process. Still, BookmarkSync provides additional functions to allow you to get the most out of a large bookmark collection.
  
  
• Import to/from Internet Explorer - You can easily import or export different sets of bookmarks to or from your IE browser. BookmarkSync generates a standard 'bookmarks.html' file that can be read by all popular browsers, and even published on the web.
